The teacher will work on both accuracy (learning how to speak and write without mistakes) and fluency (speaking with ease and good pace). Students are taught basic Grammar, Vocabulary suitable to their level and communication skills. Langma School of Languages’ 14 week Elementary course is designed for a beginner where students start to use basic phrases, words, and sentences. Students write long compositions and make oral presentations in class in a way that makes the use of Oriya a natural process and helps students at this level blend in with students from higher levels.

Reading assignments from Oriya sources on the Internet are also a feature of this level. Students at the elementary level are introduced to the use of Oriya materials in digitised form and on the Internet. They engage in functional activities, often in small groups, necessary to their survival in the school community and later on in a Oriya setting. From the first day of classes, students are exposed to authentic reading and listening materials.

In all other aspects of their daily life in the school, beginning level students abide by the full Language Pledge. During the first week, elementary level students sign a modified pledge allowing them to interact with their instructor in English while in class. The beginning level is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Oriya. Words borrowed from Sanskrit occur in two forms: tatsama (close to the original form) and tadbhava (remote from the original form). Its lexicon has been enriched by borrowings from these languages like Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Turkish, French, Portuguese, and Sanskrit. Odia has been heavily influenced by the Dravidian languages as well as Arabic, Persian, and English. The first poetic classic was composed in the 15th century, and literary prose began to take shape in the 18th century. Odia arguably dates back to the 10th century CE, though it was almost indistinguishable from Bengali until the 11th century. Oldest of the eastern group of the Indo-Aryan family, Odia is derived from Ardhamagadhi Prakrit.
